The switch on a Dualit kettle is an important safety feature that allows the appliance to heat water while engaged and automatically cut power once released.
However, over time and use, switches can become faulty or worn down. If you’ve noticed the switch button on your Dualit kettle popping back up instead of staying depressed, don’t assume the worst just yet. Many times, the issue has a simple fix.
Dualit Kettle’s Switch Won’t Stay Down
One possibility is a buildup of limescale or mineral deposits around the switch mechanism inhibiting smooth movement. Dualit kettles are prone to this due to hard water. To clean, start by removing any exterior scale with white vinegar or a 50/50 water-vinegar solution. Then disassemble the kettle base to access the switch interior. Carefully scrub away residue using a toothbrush or pipe cleaner dipped in vinegar. Rinse and dry thoroughly.
Inspect the switch contacts and springs for signs of corrosion, bending, or breakage which could disrupt smooth operation. Gently bend contacts back into place or replace springs if damaged. Check that the switch button still depresses fully until clicking into the “on” position. If not, further disassembly may be required to access and clean the switch assembly.
Examine the rubber diaphragm that activates the switch. Over time, rubber can dry out, crack, or lose elasticity. A degraded diaphragm may not apply enough pressure to keep the switch engaged. Replacements are available from Dualit if needed. Test the action with a new diaphragm installed.
For electrical switches, debris can interfere with making and breaking contact. Try gently spraying the switch interior with contact cleaner, working the button a few times. This helps dissolve any residue while lubricating the mechanism. Do not immerse the entire kettle base in liquid.
If cleaning and inspection doesn’t remedy the issue, it’s possible the switch itself has reached the end of its functional lifespan. Dualit switches typically last 5-10 years with regular use. Contact Dualit customer support regarding replacement options still under warranty. An authorized repair technician can install a new switch if no longer covered.
With some basic troubleshooting and cleaning, you’ve hopefully identified the root cause keeping the switch from staying engaged. Taking care of switch problems prevents further safety risks from an electrically live kettle base. Reach out if problems persist after thorough checking and maintenance – your Dualit kettle should provide reliable service with a fully functioning safety switch.
